서울 국제 미디어아트 비엔날레는 2000년 ‘미디어시티’라는 명칭으로 개막하여 2년마다 열려온 국제 전시이다. 이 행사는 동시대 예술을 중심으로 과학, 인문학, 동시대 테크놀로지의 교류와 통섭을 기반으로 제작된 뉴미디어아트의 가장 탁월한 작품들을 시민들과 국내외의 관람객들에게 소개하고 전시하는 것을 목표로 한다. 역대 전시 총감독으로는 김선정, 박일호, 이원일, 윤진섭, 송미숙 등이 있었고, 지난 12년간 전 세계에서 1000명 이상의 미디어아트 작가들이 서울국제미디어아트 비엔날레에 참여하였다.
Launched in 2000 with a specific aim to enforce the image of the city of Seoul as a capital of technological development, the Seoul International Media Art Biennale is one of the few international biennials with a focus on ‘media art’. Previous curators have included Misook Song, Wonil Rhee, Jin Sup Yoon, Byong Hak Ryu, Sunjung Kim, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jeremy Millar, Barbra London and Yuko Hasegawa.
