제1회 서울 국제 미디어아트 비엔날레는 시공간의 외부적 경계를 허무는 디지털 혁명의 다양한 표현인 ‘도시: 0과 1사이’를 주제로, 네트워킹의 구심점이자 매개로서의 도시 서울이 가지는 의미를 조망하였다. 서울시립미술관과 서울 각 곳의 미술관 및 공공장소에서 이루어졌던 이 전시는 ‘미디어 아트 2000’, ‘시티 비젼 / 클럽 시티’, ‘서브웨이 프로젝트’의 소주제로 나누어져, 아날로그와 디지털의 역동적 커뮤니케이션을 통해 새로운 방향을 찾고자 하는 거대도시 서울의 의지를 나타냈다. 또한 미디어를 화두로 네트워크의 구심점이자 매개로서의 도시 서울이 갖는 의미를 새로운 관점에서 조망하였다.

The 1st Seoul International Media Art Biennale took the name “City: between 0 and 1,” embracing the burgeoning digital revolution that was redrawing—nd in fact erasing—he boundary between time and space. Investigating the Korean capital city’s emergence as an intermediary and hub of networking, exhibitions were presented at a number of museums and public spaces in Seoul. Accompanying the biennial’s binary code-inspired them were many sub-themes, such as “media art 2000,” “city vision / club city,” and “subway project,” all of which reflected the desire to find a new direction through dynamic communication between the analog andthe digital.
