데이비드 보웬의 작업은 나뭇잎, 파도, 바람 등 한시적인 자연의 소재들을 섬세하게 설계된 키네틱 구조물로 번역한다. 이 장치는 집파리 떼의 행동들을 기반으로 하는 트위터 메시지를 전송한다. 이 집파리들은 컴퓨터 키보드가 설치된 구형 아크릴 구조물 내에 위치한다. 따라서 파리들이 움직이거나 상호작용할 때마다 키보드 자판 위를 지나게 되는데, 이 동작들은 영상을 통해 실시간으로 수합된다. 파리들이 특정 자판을 작동시킬 경우, 자판에 상응하는 글자가 트위터 창에 입력된다. 이렇게 140자가 채워질 때마다, 또는 파리들이 “엔터” 자판을 누를 때마다, 축적된 글자들을 트윗으로 전송된다. 따라서 집파리 커뮤니티의 단순한 움직임들이 실시간으로 끊임없이 트위터 메시지로 보내진다. 이렇게 쌓인 메시지들은 소셜미디어와 네트워크라는 커다란 영역 내에서 임의적이고 무작위적인 활동처럼 기록된다.
David Bowen’s works translate ephemeral phenomena of nature into delicately planned kinetic structures. Flytweet sends twitter messages based on the activities of a collection of houseflies. The flies live inside an acrylic sphere along with a computer keyboard. As the flies move and interact inside their home, they fly over the keys on the keyboard. These movements are collected in real-time via video. When a particular key is triggered by the flies, the key’s corresponding character is entered into a twitter text box. When 140 characters are reached or the flies trigger the “enter” key, the message containing the accumulated characters is tweeted. Thus live twitter messages are perpetually sent in real-time based on the simple movements of the community of houseflies. These constantly accumulating messages appear as records of random activity within the larger sphere of social media and networking.
