전시회장 곳곳에 놓여 있는 장치로부터 이따금 사람의 목소리가 흘러 나온다. 마이크와 스피커를 갖춘 이장치는 네트워크로 연결되어 있어 건물 안에 있는 누군가의 중얼거림은 몇초 늦게 다른 공간에 출력되고, 계속해서 다른 장치로 전송되어 출력된다.
정보의 입력, 전송, 출력은 건물 내의 온갖 곳에서 일어나고 있다. 관객 각각은 각 전시공간에서 그 일부를 체험한다. 이와 동시에 별도로 설치된 ‘청취실(Listening Room)’에서 건물안의 소리와 무선(無線)으로 연결된 상호작용 전체를 조감할 수 있다. 이 ‘작품’은 시스템상으로는 네트워크화된 장치와 공간에서 이루어지는 상호작용의 총체이며,개념적으로는 각 전시에 대한 코멘트를 포착하여 네트워크화하는 메타적층위이다.
전시물에 대한 개인적인 속삭임이 갑자기 다른 공간에서 들려진다. 트위터의 속삭임이 리트위트(RT)에 의해 불특정 다수의 사람들에게 순간적으로 전달되어 버리는 이 작품에서 (인간을 매개로 한 것은 아니지만) 정보는 네트워크를 통해 예상치 못한 곳에 전달됨으로써 새로운 의미와 해석을 파생시킨다. 건물 내부의 닫힌 회로는 세계에 대한 하나의 축도라고 할 수 있다.
게다가 전체 시스템은 일종의 ‘인터페이스’로서, 전시 공간과 관람객 사이에 놓인 감각적 층위를 중재한다고 해석될 수 있다.
별 뜻 없는 개인적인 말들이 공간을 넘어 다른 사람들에게 전달되는 것을 감시 시스템으로 여길 수도 있을 것이다. 하지만 이 시스템은 공간적 거리 및 사적인 것과 공적인 것의 경계를 넘어 건물 안이라는 유리상자 안에 있는 모두가 코멘트와 메시지를 전달할 수 있는 상향식 의사결정구조가 될 수도 있다.
지금까지 ‘miscommunication’으로 간주되어 온 정보가 공간을 넘어 공유됨으로써 하나의 ‘장’을 이루기 시작한다. 이 작품은 소셜 미디어의 시대에 우리가 의사소통의 방식을 재창조할 수 있다는 가능성을 시사하고 있다.

Sounds of a human voice are emitted from devices placed around the exhibition area. The devices are equipped with a network of microphones and speakers which capture the murmurs of people in the building and then a few seconds later play them in a different space, continuously transferred elsewhere as output.
The input, transmission and output of information are taking place within the building. Audiences experience each of the aspects in its own part of the ongoing processes in the exhibition space. At the same time, in a separate Listening Room, viewers can take in sounds within the building and have an overall view of network connected by wireless interaction. The work is in the system representing the totality of the networked device interactions which arise in the space and conceptually lies in relation between the complex networked circuits and human relations being spread in the exhibition spaces. Private whispers about the exhibit contents suddenly appear in another place. This piece is like the whispers in Twitter which are suddenly spread to others as a RT (Retweet, but not mediated by humans, however), with information being passed through the network to unexpected place enabling us to anticipate a new meaning and interpretation. Like a closed circuit in a building, the work represents a benediction of the world as one. Additionally, the whole system could be interpreted as an “Interface” or mediating sensual layer between the exhibition spaces and the visitors, generating the self-organization of information similar to the neural networks.
Private comments with little meaning reaching the ears of those beyond the space in which they were made can be compared to a surveillance system. However, the same system would become a bottom up “platform” of visitors that anybody could actively participate by listening, from speaking to the system to opening up new circuit of (mis)communication beyond spatial distance and boundary of public/private.
Here a new communication space is emerging by multi-layering the information that used to be considered as ‘miscommunication’. This work suggests the possibility of recreating the communicational method in the era of social media.
