1998년 작 <킨더가든 아토니오 산타 알리아>1932 에서 2008년 작 <알제의 행복한 순간의 단면들>에 이르기까지 데이비드 클레어바우트 작품들은 사진과 영화의 포착하기 어려운 연결지점을 날카롭게 보여주고 있다. 회화와 드로잉으로부터 출발한 이 벨기에 출신 작가는 흑백사진을 대형 프로젝션으로 보여주는 방식을 택함으로써 이미지에 기적적인 시간성을 부여하는데 성공했다. 정지된 흑백사진의 풍경 일부가 알아채기 힘들만큼 미세하게 흔들리면서 영원히 정지된 것 같던 대상의 시간성이 부활하는 것을 바라보는 일은 관객에게 깊은 인상을 남기게 된다.
< 알제의 행복한 순간의 단면들 >는 전작의 구성을 그대로 유지한 채 무대를 알제의 어느 바닷가 건물 옥상으로 옮겨 놓은 것이다. 이 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 한 명씩 모두 따로 촬영되어 나중에 하나의 이미지로 모아놓은 것이다. 인물들로부터 하늘을 나는 갈매기들에 이르기까지 각각의 시간과 시점들은 모두 조합된 것일 뿐 아니라 무한히 변주될 수 있는 것이다. 클레어바우트의 작품은 한 이미지가 함축하는 잠재적 시간의 추상성을 마치 개별적인 톱니바퀴들의 조율된 운동처럼 구체화한다.

David Claerbout has been working on the entry and existing points between photography and film that has become the forefront of this contemporary dialogue. Trained as a painter, he is best known for presenting vintage black and white photography through large-scale and silent projection. Over the years, he has grown further interests in the visualization of time. From his early works such as Kindergarten Antoinio Sant’Elia (1932) in 1998 to The Algiers’ Sections of a Happy Moment (2008), Claerbout investigated the nature of time by offering a chance to experience the convergence of the two mediums – photographic and filmic images – that co-exist and occupy the same object simultaneously. Featuring a set of images taken from a small rooftop by the beach, this film represents a narrative collection of photographs that capture the still images of people to flying seagulls as well as situating them in infinite variations.
