아크람 자타리의 작업은 그의 동료이자 사진작가인 푸아드 엘쿠리와 사메르 모다드가 1997년에 공동 설립한 아랍영화재단에서부터 비롯된 것이다. 지금도 진행중인 중동분쟁과 레바논 시민내전(1975-1990)에서 파생된 이미지들을 보관하고 되찾기 위한 노력의 일환으로 세워진 이 재단의 목표는 극도의 폭력과 정치적 불안정으로 인해 피폐해진 각 개인의 역사를 시각적으로 재-기록하기 위함이다. 자타리는 출처가 불분명한 과거 사진들과 영상 자료들 그리고 개인의 이야기를 수집함으로써 정부의 공식 역사에 의해 은폐되어 왔던 개인의 기억과 욕망들을 조명하고자 하는 재단 설립의 본령을 지켜나가고 있다. 자타리는 사랑하는 대상의 상실과 떠남에 대한 그리움을 작가 특유의 감각으로 그려내며, 개별 역사의 ‘다양화’ 작업을 통해 ‘집단적 허위진술(집단적으로 기억하는 잘못된 역사)’ 에의 저항을 추구한다. 2010년 작, < 내일이면 다 괜찮아질꺼야>는 10년 전 헤어진 두 남자가 재회를 갈망하는 상황을 통해 둘 사이의 친밀함이라는 주제를 내밀하게 들여다 본다. 에릭 로메르의 영화에서 영감을 얻은 자타리는 이 작품에서 그리움과 재회에 대한 사랑에 대한 이야기를 들려주는데, 이 내러티브는 에릭 로메르의 영화와도 연결되는 쥘 베른의 소설 < 녹색 광선>에 나오는 전설을 상기시킨다. 녹색광선은 해가 질 무렵이나 해뜨기 직전에 순간적으로 번뜩이는 푸른 섬광인데, 그것을 목격한 사람들에게 마치 주문을 건 듯 사랑의 행운을 가져다 준다고 한 이야기다.
Akram Zaatari’s practice extends from the Arab Film Foundation, which he co-founded with his colleagues and photographers, Fouad Elkoury and Samer Mohdad in 1997. Dedicating their efforts to retrieve and preserve images from the ongoing events of the Middle-Eastern conflict and the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), the aim of this foundation was to re-document the visual history among individuals, damaged by extreme violence and political instability. By collecting anonymous photographs, films and stories from the past, Zaatri continues to hold on to the foundation’s original premise to illuminate on individual memories and desires that were ignored by the state’s official history. Zaatari seeks to resist against ‘collective misrepresentations’ in an attempt to ‘diversify’ and explore a sense of longing from loss and departure with the loved ones. Tomorrow Everything Will Be Alright (2010) delves into the theme of intimacy between two men separated ten years ago, expressing their desires to meet again. Zaatari tells a love story about longing and reunion through referencing Eric Rohmer’s film Le Rayon Vert (1986) that revisits the legendary tale of Jules Verne, in which a flash of light strikes before sunset or sunrise, blessing a fortune of love for those who witness it.
