구동희의 작업은 실재로 간주되는 사실과 그것을 둘러싼 허구적 조건들의 관계를 보여준다. 2007년의 < 실뜨기와 정전기>, 그리고 2010년의 Cast와 같은 작품들에서 그는 인형극이나 상황극에서 볼 수 있을 무대를 만들어 놓은 뒤 연기자들로 하여금 그곳에 갇혀 있거나 바깥으로부터 완전히 차단된 인물들을 표현하도록 하였다. 이 인물들이 존재하는 곳은 그들에게는 완벽한 자연이자 그 자체로 완결된 공간이다. 한편 외부의 관객들은 이 장소가 인공적인 장치들로 둘러싸인 왜곡된 세계라는 것을 볼 수 있다. 인물들이 보여주는 감정적 몰입은 허구적 장치로서의 공간이 실제의 세계보다 더 완벽한 환영을 제공할 수 있다는 것을 역설적으로 드러낸다.
Under the Vein : I Spell on You는 자연적인 원본과 거의 유사하게 만들어진 산책로의 인공 개울에서 일어난 작가의 경험을 토대로 만들어졌다. 개울가를 따라 걸으면서 그것이 주는 즐거움과 위안에 대해 만족했던 그가 사실은 이 개울이 구청의 누군가가 제어하는 수도꼭지로부터 흘러나온 것이라는 사실을 알고 배신감을 느꼈던 경험에서 이 이야기는 시작된다. 작품 속에서 L-rode를 들고 수맥을 찾는 인물은 실은 수맥과는 관련이 없는 장소를 거닐고 있다. 보이지 않는 물줄기는 자신의 몸 속을 흐르는 보이지 않는 혈관들의 존재와 연결된다.

Donghee Koo focused on the relationship between truth regarded as real and fake conditions surrounding it. In prior works including Static Electricity of Cat’s Cradle in 2007 and Cast in 2010, she created stages that remind us of a puppet show or a play and ordered actors and actresses to portray situation completely isolated from the outside. According to Koo, a place with such characters exists and becomes the perfect nature or a perfect space as it is. On the other hand, the audience can recognize that the place is actually a distorted world surrounded by artificial devices. The total emotional immersion by characters ironically reveals that an artificial space can provide more a more realistic fantasy than a real one is able to.
Under the Vein: I Spell on You was born out of the artist’s own experience at an artificial stream that looks exactly like real nature. While walking down along the stream, she actually felt the satisfaction, joy and consolation offered by nature. The story starts a point in time when she discovered that the stream flows out from a tap controlled by somebody else and subsequently felt betrayed. In this work, the character that holds L-rode to find the vein of water actually wanders around where there is no natural vein of water. The invisible veins of water are linked to the invisible veins of blood inside his body.
