지난 해 3월 11일, 동일본해를 강타한 대지진의 여파 이후, 많은 미디어들이 이 엄청난 자연재해와 피해자들에 대한 선정적인 보도를 쏟아냈다. 해안가를 집어삼킬 듯 거대한 파도가 보여주는 숨이 막힐 듯 압도적 이미지에 전 세계가 흔들렸다. 그로부터 며칠이 채 지나지 않아 후쿠시마의 다이치 원자력 발전소가 폭발하는 사고가 연이어 터졌고, 여기에서 목숨을 건졌다 한들 홈 리스로 전락하거나 방사능 노출로부터 안전할 수 없는 상황이다. 공신력 있는 정보가 부재한 상태에서, (이미지를 생산해내는 미디어의 권력을 강화시키는) 재난 뉴스 동영상과 사진 이미지들은 세상을 또 한번 충격으로 몰아넣었다.
자연재해를 보도하는 미디어의 쏠림 현상에 대한 반응으로, 자연과 자연이 가진 힘을 어떻게 인식할 것인지에 대한 질문들이 속속 제기되었다. 직간접적으로 이번 사태의 영향권에 놓인 학자들 그리고 예술가들은 각자의 방식으로, 즉 희생자들에게 지지와 연대의식을 표하는 제스추어로서, 또 그들이 목도한 엄청난 상황에 대한 감정적 반응으로서, 이번 재난을 어떻게 받아들여야 할지 해석을 내놓았다.
괴테 인스티튜트와의 협력 프로그램으로 진행되는 본 패널 디스커션은 다양한 층위의 작가와 학자들이 모여 예술과 재난, 예술과 미디어 사이의 관계에 대한 질문을 열기 위해 마련되었다. 패널리스트는 이번 미디어시티서울 2012의 공동 큐레이터인 유키코 시카타, 이번 비엔날레 참여작가로 3.11이후 일본인의 삶을 다룬 신작 영상을 소개하는 독일 작가 니나 피셔와 마로안 엘 사니, 사진작가 박진영(a.k.a Area Park), 동국대 박진희 교수다.

Since the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11th, extensive media coverage had sensationalized the natural disaster and its victims. The world was shaken by breathtaking images of a giant wave sweeping across coastal areas, and a few days later by the explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear energy plant that left much of the surviving population not only homeless but also exposed to the threat of radiation. While little information was provided by official sources, the world was shaken by news footages and photographs that reinforced the power of the image and knowledge it creates.
In response to the media coverage of this natural disaster, questions have been asked about our perception of nature and its force. Interpretations of this disaster came from artists as well as scholars in a reflective manner by those directly or indirectly affected; by those who were touched by what they saw; by those in a gesture of support and solidarity to the victims.
For this panel discussion in collaboration with the Goethe Institut, various artists and scholars will open up questions about the relationship between art and disaster, art and the media. Panelists include Yukiko Shikata (co-curator of the 7th Seoul International Media Art Biennale), Nina Fischer and Maroan El Sani, and Jinyoung Park (a.k.a Area Park) and Jinhee Park (professor at Dongguk University).
