일본 야마구치 미디어아트센터의 에듀케이터가 진행하는 오디오 워크숍으로, 다양한 경험을 통해 ‘소리를 듣는’ 행위를 재 탐구하고 사운드 디자인을 해 보는 프로그램

“Walking around surround”는 다양한 경험을 통해 ‘소리를 듣는’ 행위를 재 탐구해 보는 워크숍 프로그램이다. 우리가 음악을 듣는 방식은 스테레오 스피커의 ‘플레이’ 버튼을 누르는 단순한 과정 같지만 그 안에는 다양한 청각적 요소와 과정을 수반한다. 스피커 막의 진동과 공간파를 통한 소리의 전달, 사람 귀의 구조 같은 것이 바로 소리의 구성, 전달 요소다.
참여자들은 눈을 가린 채 소리의 주변을 거닐며 공간을 경험하고, 나아가 무선 스피커를 여러 형태로 공간 상에 배치해보면서 자신만의 사운드 디자인에 도전해 봄으로써, 소리의 비밀에 한층 가까워진다.
교육적 효과
- 청각 인지 메커니즘에 대한 지식 습득
- 소리의 구조에 대한 이해
- 소리의 기제에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 한 상상력의 증대
- 청각 감각과 관련된 창조성의 확장

This audio workshop aims to reinvestigate the act of “hearing sound” through experiences of various kinds. All we have to do if we want to listen to music is simply set up a stereo and a pair of speakers, and press “Play”. What follows seems like a very simple acoustic phenomenon, but as a matter of fact, it involves a variety of factors and processes, such as the vibration of the speakers’ membranes, the transmission of sound through airwaves, and the construction of the human ear. Participants in this workshop will ponder the secrets of sound while exploring the mechanism of acoustic perception, walking around the building blindfolded, and designing their own sonic environment by setting up originally built wireless speakers.
Expected educational effects
- Knowledge about the mechanisms of acoustic perception
- Knowledge about the construction of sound
- Improved imagination based on mechanical understanding
- Improved creativity related to acoustic sense
