Chikako Yamashiro

Chikako Yamashiro experiments with imagery and narrative in performance, photography, and video as a means of addressing history, politics, and cultural realities. The artist’s work often focuses on the history of occupation of the island of Okinawa, where she was born and raised. Yamashiro contemplates the marginalized identities of people who have lived through such histories, and attempts to give them a voice through her work. Yamashiro earned an MA in Environmental Design from the Graduate School of Formative Arts at Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts in 2002. She has exhibited at international institutions and art spaces including the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, where she was featured in a solo project (2012), as well as the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (2015); the Seoul Museum of Art (2015); and Alternative Space LOOP, Seoul (2017). International exhibitions include the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial (2015–16) and the 3rd Aichi Triennale (2016). Yamashiro is a recipient of the Grand Prix of the Asian Art Award 2017 and the Tokyo Contemporary Art Award 2020–22.
