This artwork by Cleaning Project focuses on Line 2 of the Seoul subway. More than simply sweeping and mopping, it is an effort to solve the problems of Line 2. It is also a study of subway station buildings and the structures in the trains (for instance, trash cans, announcements, signs, advertisements, seats, all kinds of vending machines, landscape architecture, etc.), as well as related architectural structures (facilities for water supply, stairs and escalators, newspaper stands, ticket booths with their barred windows, and guideposts for the handicapped). The purpose of this work is manifold: to remove unnecessary things; to replace anything that is misplaced; and to redesign objects that disturb passengers, taking into consideration each object’s aesthetic and practical aspects. In doing so, we should also consider the following characteristics: convenience, precision, relevance, safety, and visual appeal.
