Jeong Young-Hoon’s The Flowers (Pedigree Program-2) is part of his pedigree program designed to express the meaning of the existence of ‘I (an individual)’ and the algorithm between a society and mankind. In this digital interactive show, he presents a new visual possibility of digital art and a statement about human society and history.
In this work the artist uses various forms of butterflies as signs of uncertainty, spiritual transition and life. Each of the nine monitors function as an allegory of an independent region and individual. Viewers are allowed to click-and-drag the butterflies on the screen between monitors to see them constantly change shapes. As they move, the butterflies give viewers a message on social or historical issues via changes of colors and patterns. The mechanism also helps viewers connect with websites both within and outside the exhibition hall. In this way Jeong focuses on the ‘bloodline(or pedigree)’ between areas (monitors) based on equality and friendly relationships, thus creating a community in the cyber world via multi-accessibility. This community is based on freedom, equality, diversity and universal spiritual purity that free its members from any form of totalitarian oppression, and here everyone can freely access information offered on the basis of transparency.
