
Kim Jangun is an art and cultural theorist who has worked extensively as a curator, critic, and educator. He began his career as a journalist for the monthly magazine Art (2000) and went on to serve as a curator at the alternative space Pool (2001–2002), head of the art team at the Anyang Public Art Project Foundation (2006–2007), and curator of the “On the Border” section at the 7th Gwangju Biennale (2008). From 2011 to 2014, he was an adjunct professor at Kaywon University of Art and Design, and from 2014 to 2016, he served as the Head of Exhibition Planning Team 2 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul. He was also a member of the directorial collective for the 2018 Seoul Mediacity Biennale.
His major curatorial projects include Genre Allegory – Sculptural (Total Museum of Contemporary Art, 2018), World of Sijing (MMCA Seoul, 2015), Asteroid G (in collaboration with Sora Kim, Choonwoong Choi, and Joona Lee, Geumseong Water Purification Plant, Gongju, 2013), Fiction Work – MMCA (MMCA Gwacheon, 2012), Bahc Yiso – Journey of the Concept (co-curated, Art Sonje Center, Seoul, 2011), The Adventures of Mr. Kim and Mr. Lee (directed by Suyoung Chung, LIG Art Hall, Seoul, 2010), and Sharing – An Experiment for the Illicit (Platform 2009, former Defense Security Command site, Seoul, 2009).
From 2005 to 2008, Kim was part of the friendly enemies collective with Kim Hyunjin, Haegue Yang, and Jooyoun Lee, and from 2004 to 2008, he worked with Minouk Lim and Frédéric Michon as part of the pidgin collective. In 2009, he founded normal type, an independent experimental platform for contemporary art, which he ran until 2013.
He is the author of two critical essay collections: At the Edge of Art and the Political (Hyunsil Munhwa Research, 2012) and Impossible Dialogue: Art and Writing (Mediabus, 2018).
