From the Other Side of Voice 1

“In this event, speakers and performers explored female voices across generations, traditions, and geographies. Producer Sang-il Choi and writer Jiyeon Kim, known for their radio program On the Journey Looking for Our Songs, reinterpreted labor songs, folk tunes, casual chatter, and shamanic chants passed down by grandmothers to reveal the enduring strength and time carried by women’s voices. Siren Eun Young Jung presented a performance that reimagined Chunhyang-ga, a classic Korean pansori, as a new kind of opera that exposes class conflict and social struggle. Yongwoo Lee offered a micro-chronology of Kim Chuja and other Asian divas to open a critical space for questioning modern auditory culture.
